how do celebrities charged with crimes not show up in court in person?

ive seen celebrities have their lawyers show up in court for them. how are they able to do that? i thought defendants had to be there in person.

2. u dont have to be a celebrity... for a major crime, you will have to show up most the time, but if its a lesser crime, you can have a lawyer speak on your behalf. i know this cuz i had to go to court before and the lawyer told me that i could stay home if i didnt wanna come and that he would handle all of it for me.
3. If they are on trial yes they must show up. But for hearings they can just have their lawyers show up. Money buys you anything now a days/.
4. Unless the judge orders that you be there in person, a lawyer can be there by proxy and speak in your behalf. This can happen with anyone, not just celebrities.
